Independence and autonomy are highly valued character traits throughout the Western World. They are to be fought for, often with much striving, persevering through pain and disappointment and failure, all with ‘take it on the chin’ bravado. Signs of weakness or lack of commitment are considered pitiable, culturally obliging the putting up of a façade to conceal what’s really there. Scripture, counter-culturally, exhorts total dependence (submission!) on God, inter-dependence on one another and concerted care for our neighbors. The Apostle Paul admits that we all see, for now, as through a post-shower, bathroom mirror. The Holy Spirit’s task is to bring clarity, showing us the Kingdom way of things and encouraging us to continue swimming against the current of our old nature and the pressures of the world around us.
