Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky, and you know them by name.
You are amazing God.
All-powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim:
You are amazing God.
These are the words to the chorus of the worship song, Indescribable, written by Chris Tomlin. In singing these words, you can feel the weightiness, the immensity of those character traits of God. My (not-for-singing) follow-up would be something like this: You are amazing God – because in coming to rescue us, pitifully inadequate us, you bridged a chasm otherwise un-bridgeable. Even so, it’s only your unfathomable mercy that allows us to safely approach this Love which knows no bounds. It is a deep, deep mystery into which we’ve been called, this mystery that ‘overwhelms and satisfies my soul.’
And when I think that God His son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin . . .
These words from the hymn, How Great Thou Art, written by Stuart K. Hine, reinforce my overwhelm, causing me to shake my head in a vain effort to sort through my scrambled senses. Then, finding that to be of no use, I surrender, joining in worship with the hymn writer:
Then sings my soul My Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art! (x2)
In leaving the courts of Heaven to become a man, Jesus was, as someone has expressed it, downwardly mobile. He not only failed to seek prominence in the society around him, but he actively pursued a shockingly counter-cultural way of living. His mission, straight out of the heart of his Father, was to die. There was no other way to carry out the herculean task he’d been assigned, which was to conquer both sin and the grave, once for all eternity, for us.
We are the blessed ones, for whom both sin and the grave have been conquered, once for all eternity. Worship is our only possible response. More dizzying still, God chooses to be glorified by our worship! Our worship! Can you imagine that? Looking forward to seeing God’s favorites tomorrow, 10 AM, 2 PM UK* 3 PM ES* PD
