How big is big? I mean, to a toddler, adults are big, to a mouse, an elephant is big, to a Cessna airplane, a Boeing 777 is big. For me, anything that’s tall falls into the category of big, too. We took the Cog Railway up Pike’s Peak one year in July, leaving behind 95 degrees in Manitou Springs and climbing nearly 7800 feet to the top where it was 65 degrees (chilly!). That was big. I just saw an aerial photograph of the road to the top of Tianmen Mountain in China. It involves 99 hairpin turns climbing up the edge of the rock face! BIG! There is an alternative means of reaching the top, though – a cable car! It is 24,459 feet long! That’s crazy big – and a big fat NO! on my bucket list (can you believe this is a huge tourist attraction??)
So, big is relative. A traditional African American spiritual, ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,’ speaks to God’s bigness, picturing the globe as nestling minutely in His huge, protective, cupped hands. King David, 3000 years ago, wrote: “The LORD is the greatest of all, King-God over all other gods! In one hand he holds the mysteries of the earth, and in the other he holds the highest mountain peaks. He’s the owner of every ocean, the engineer and sculptor of earth itself.” Psalm 95, TPT. That, too, is big!
Our big God saw and cared for a rejected, despairing, maidservant and her son in the wilderness. He saw and chose elderly, childless man to become the Patriarch of a great nation. He chose 12 poorly equipped men 2000 years ago and is still impacting the world with their witness today. He sees every sparrow that falls to the ground. “He looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens.” Job 28:24, NLT. He sees us and loves us!
I think He’s trustworthy enough for me to rest secure in Him. I think His bigness is beyond my comprehension. I think being His disciple is a safe think. I think His Plan ‘A’ is unstoppably accomplishing His will today, through me (and us). I think His all-seeing character sees me in a totality greater than my fathomer can fathom. I’m glad to be His. Now you know what I think. PD
