Jesus’ coming was not a judgment or condemnation or disapproval or a ‘setting the bar too high’ event. It was a whole-life-altering, joy-producing, intimately relational, divine-love-saturated invitation to an unending wedding feast, replete with the finest wine anyone’s ever sipped. That’s why, as Jesus’ followers, we are, 24/7, happy, contented, serene confident, hope-filled – oh wait, that’s not always our theme song, is it? But why does singing and rejoicing and dancing and celebrating not fill our calendars, our days? Here’s a well-known quote from C.S. Lewis which speaks to this: “Our desires are not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
