How Much is That Degree in the Brochure?

As college tuitions continue to rise, (in the US) more and more parents, grandparents, and even close relatives, are choosing to open a college fund bank account for the children in their lives. (A very creative Vineyard pastor, with 7 children, kept a gumball dispenser, complete with coin slot, on his desk in his office with the sign: O’Dean kids’ College Fund). Other times this action is done secretly, without speaking of it, preferring it be kept quiet. Until, that is, those children approach college age, when the account, with its contents and sole purpose, are revealed. This may be a shock to the young person, disbelieving that such a beautiful act of generosity has been undertaken for years – for them! Doors which may have appeared completely closed, well beyond their means, suddenly come within their grasp. That school, that degree, rush into view. It’s overwhelming to consider. The difficulty is in adequately expressing thanks, fully communicating the joy of this revealing of love for them. While these monies are a gift, not a loan, there is a kind of moral obligation to do one’s very best, to study hard, to make their elders proud, to honor their loving sacrifice.

And isn’t this our dilemma in salvation? To be offered eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus, God’s Son, is _____________________ (search for your own blank-filler here). Imagine the riches now ours in Jesus! Spend a moment considering your own personal ‘before and after’ story. How is today different than it might have been?
